Embarking on a camping trip with your canine companion is an excellent way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and create lasting memories together. However, just like you would prepare yourself for an outdoor adventure, your furry friend also requires some special attention before starting your trip.
In this guide, I’ll give you the steps i’m taking to ensure Eeki is ready and excited for a rewarding and reinforcing overlanding adventure. Which we embark on this October!
1. Assess Your Dog’s Readiness: Before you even start packing the tent, take a moment to evaluate if your dog is cut out for camping. Consider their age, temperament, and health. Most importantly of course; has your dog found other similar experience rewarding or punishing! If your dog is anxious around new people or loud noises, or if they have health issues, it might be best to skip this particular trip or consult your veterinarian for guidance.
2. Visit the Vet: A pre-camping visit to the vet is crucial to ensure your dog is in good health and up-to-date on vaccinations, flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Discuss any concerns you have about your dog’s well-being during the trip, and ask for advice on how to handle potential health challenges that might arise.
3. Basic Training Tune-Up: Brush up on your dog’s basic training commands such as “stay,” and “recall.” These commands will be especially handy in a new and potentially distracting environment. If your dog has never been exposed to off-leash situations make sure to set them up for success and get a LONG long line, while camping is not a good time to start off lead training you’ll be dog training the whole time and wont get a chance to enjoy your beautiful adventure! Take this opportunity before going to start some off lead training AND practice being on a long line in new environments. If your wondering about how to get started with off lead training book yourself a dog training consultation with a respected dog trainer.
4. Introduce Camping Gear: Familiarize your dog with camping equipment gradually. Let them explore the tent, sleeping bags, and other gear in a relaxed setting. This will help reduce any anxiety your dog might feel when encountering new objects at the campsite. As i will be overlanding (sleeping in a rooftop tent) i’m teaching Eeki to sleep in the car before even leaving! As i type this 2023-08-28 11:17pm in a McDonalds parking lot, Eeki is relaxing in the car watching cars pass on the highway and people grab coffees in the drive through.
Pro tip: Get your dog a backpack so they can carry their own equipment, most dogs can carry a substantial 10-25% their bodyweight!
5. Practice Campsite Scenarios: If possible, set up a mock campsite in your backyard or a quiet area. Spend some time there with your dog, letting them get used to the sights, sounds, and smells associated with camping. Use this opportunity to practice setting up and breaking down your camping gear while your dog is nearby.
6. Packing for Your Pup: Just like you pack your essentials, create a checklist for your dog:
- Food and treats: Pack enough of your dog’s regular food and some treats for rewards.
- Water and bowl: Ensure access to clean water throughout the trip.
- Bedding: Bring a cozy dog bed or blanket for comfort during downtime.
- Leash and collar/harness: Keep your dog safe and secure during walks and exploration.
- Identification: Make sure your dog’s ID tags are up-to-date with your contact information.
- First-aid kit: Include items like bandages, tweezers, and antiseptic for any potential minor injuries.
9. Plan for Rest: Camping can be physically and mentally exhausting for your dog. Allow for plenty of rest and downtime. Set up a cozy and quiet space within the campsite where your dog can relax and feel secure.
Conclusion: Preparing your dog for a camping trip requires patience, practice, and a touch of adventure. With careful planning, positive training, and a deep understanding of your furry friend’s needs, you’ll be well on your way to a harmonious and joyful camping experience together. From conquering new trails to sharing fireside stories, your dog will be your steadfast companion as you create beautiful memories amidst the beauty of the great outdoors.
